about

The Spotlight was, sort of, started in 2003. Before having a real, full band, official recording (or complete lineup) ready for the world wide web, Chris Brown recorded "Hallmark Holiday" with Paul Leavitt in 2003 as a Valentine's Day gift. The song was never intended for public ears, or consumption, but Robby was so eager to make the band "official" that he put the song, with Chris's blessing, online and officially/unofficially launched the band on Purevolume.

"Emo 'Til You're Home" was written by Chris Brown before The Spotlight was a band; however, the song was recorded with Paul Leavitt in 2004 during the "Connecticut Crossings" recording session. This song was around during The View From Here days and was even played live on Robby's college radio show during The View From Here's tour stop in Maine in the fall of 2003.

The final three songs were recorded in the spring of 2005 with Jay Chipak in his parents' basement in 2005. "Briggs Chaney" was already a full-band song that The Spotlight put as the opening track on their "Start Taking Chances" (2004) album. "How We Used To" never made its way to being an official song despite the whole band really liking it. "Last One Standing" was a song originally performed by The View From Here.

That's all I recall about these songs. The Spotlight never did anything with them, and they only existed on random CD-Rs on various spindles. Now seems as good a time as any to ensure they're preserved. Hope you enjoy.
